Most of us will know the basic facts – how a Thai football team and their coach went exploring in caves during the monsoon season and became trapped. Nine days later they were reached by two British divers, but the real rescue had yet to begin. Trapped in the cave air pocket, with rising water, deteriorating weather and over 2 kilometres of flooded tunnels to navigate back to safety, none of them knew how to dive.
Massola recreates the dramatic and tense scene of the rescue with dark, concise descriptions which give us a new appreciation for the eerie and claustrophobic conditions.
