The Great Cave Rescue by James Massola

This month we had two extra friends at Young @ Heart Book Club…great to meet you and add your interests to our already eclectic group! One of our first time attendees has been reading a gripping book that she recommends anyone to read: The Great Cave Rescue by James Massola.

“It holds your interest, even when you know how the story ends”

Most of us will know the basic facts – how a Thai football team and their coach went exploring in caves during the monsoon season and became trapped. Nine days later they were reached by two British divers, but the real rescue had yet to begin. Trapped in the cave air pocket, with rising water, deteriorating weather and over 2 kilometres of flooded tunnels to navigate back to safety, none of them knew how to dive.

Massola recreates the dramatic and tense scene of the rescue with dark, concise descriptions which give us a new appreciation for the eerie and claustrophobic conditions. He takes us behind the scenes into the skills, backgrounds and motivations of some of the more than 100,000 people from all over the world who responded with offers of help in one of the most risky and complex rescue operations the world had ever seen.
