Three Dog Night by Elsebeth Egholm

It's the coldest winter in memory as ex-convict Peter Boutrup moves to remote, rural Denmark to start a new life. But when a young woman goes missing on New Year's Eve and Peter discovers the body of Ramses, an old acquaintance from prison, things start to unravel.

A three dog night is so cold it needs three dogs to keep a sleeper warm: one on either side and one on top. In a freezing cold winter in Denmark the characters in this dark novel struggle with their own pasts and dark present lives. This mystery novel has an intriguing plot with a believable set of characters. The main protagonist has a dark past he is trying to put behind him, but events keep drawing that past into the present. A worthwhile read for fans of Scandinavian Noir.
