The Way is one of those films that you kind of know from the
outset that it will make you cry because you just can’t not relate to some
aspect of it whether it be the death of someone you love, a desire for more
meaning in your life, or to just get out there and see the world.
Directed by
Emilio Estevez and starring his father Martin Sheen as Tom, an American
ophthalmologist, this is the story of a man in France to collect the body of
his adult son Daniel who has died on the “El camino de Santiago”
unexpectedly. Impulsively, Tom embarks on the pilgrimage in place of his son
and really to say more would spoil it.
The film has an excellent cast, it’s
emotionally honest and proves to be uplifting without being overly saccharine.
I cried often, found it deeply moving, and just generally loved it.
